Home to 2.1 million people within the city and over 6 million in its metropolitan area, only three other U.S. cities are larger than Houston. Its 600 square miles are also home to numerous industrial bases, including [but not limited to] aeronautics, energy, manufacturing and transportation.
As a major port city with many prominent industries and academic institutions, Houston and its surrounding area are very multi-cultural, and over ninety languages are spoken. Of major U.S. metropolitan areas, its population is also among the youngest.
Houston’s energy industry, especially of oil and natural gas, is recognized around the world, as is its industries of renewable energy (solar and wind) and biomedical research. The area is also the U.S.’s number-one export market after swapping ranks with New York City in 2013.
As America is a “melting pot” as a nation, Houston is its own melting pot in many ways. It is estimated that about 21% (about 1.1 million people) of Houston’s metro area consists of residents born outside of the U.S., and two-thirds of those in that figure were born south of the U.S.-Mexican border. Another twenty-percent (roughly) of that figure were born in Asia.
The city has many nicknames, including: “Space City,” dating back to 1967 for hosting the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center of NASA; “New Houston,” named in tribute to the influx of immigrants from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina; and a few which were inspired locally, including “Bayou City,” “Clutch City” and “Magnolia City.”
In celebration of Houston’s diverse culture, a wide range of popular events are held each year. The largest of which, as well as the oldest, is the “Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.” Others include the annual Art Car Parade, Bayou City Art Festival, Greek Festival and Pride Parade.
In a climate as hot and humid as Houston’s, where the temperature is above 90 degrees about 106 days per year with over 90% relative humidity, properly-functioning air conditioning systems are absolutely essential.
