When choosing between different types of air conditioners for installation, a few important factors will be considered; the most important will be the size of the area being cooled and the total amount of heat generated inside that area. Here are the four most common types of air conditioning systems.
For single rooms, the window air conditioner is the most common system. All common parts are enclosed within it, including the compressor, condenser and all air conditioner coils. It is fitted into either a window sill or actually inside one of the room’s walls.
Split air conditioners consist of both an indoor and outdoor unit. The outdoor unit, which is placed outside of the room, usually holds the compressor and condenser, as well as the expansion valve. The indoor unit holds both the cooling fan and the cooling coil (or evaporator). Not only do these units not require a slot in the room’s wall, but they also have aesthetic value, use less space than window ACs and can also cool two rooms rather than just one.
Packaged air conditioners are often recommended for three or more rooms and large spaces in general, but not entire buildings. This type comes in one of two arrangements: in the first, all of its components are enclosed in a single box and cool air flows from the high-capacity blower through the ducts and into the rooms. In the second, the compressor and condenser are also part of the same casing, but the air passes through individual units (each consisting of the cooling coils and expansion valve) and then to the appropriate rooms.
Finally, the central air conditioning system is by far the most common; it is used for entire buildings, from homes and offices to larger buildings such as hotels, factories and movie theaters, and is much more cost-effective than cooling rooms individually. This system uses one large air compressor which is strong enough to produce many tons of air conditioning, if necessary. If a homeowner wants to cool their entire home with one system, this is the most likely air conditioner they will use.
